Research / Skripsi in SMA N 1 Jepara 2011/2012 (Reading)

The Reading Comprehension of Descriptive text of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara in the AcademicYear 2011/2012 Taught by Using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD). 

Concerning with School-Based Curriculum (KTSP), teaching English in SMA is expected to achieve informational level because the studentsare prepared to continue their study in University and they have to be able to receive knowledge by using language competence.Reading is one of the language skills which hasimportant roles for the students in enriching their knowledge and adding more experience. However, many students get difficulties in reading comprehension. In teaching process, teacher has to choose appropriate technique with the students’ condition in order that the aim of teaching learning process can be raised. Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) is one of teaching techniques that can be used in teaching reading to develop the students reading skill. In applying STAD, the students are designed to study in team. STAD has advantages in increasing teamwork among team members and increasing the motivation students to be more active, creative, and innovative in learning. I apply STAD for teaching the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012 to improve the reading comprehension of descriptive text because they still have difficulties in comprehending reading English texts.

The objective of this research is to test the significance of the difference between the Reading Comprehension of Descriptive text of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara in the AcademicYear 2011/2012 taughtwith and without using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD).

In this research, I hold an experimental research. I apply the posttest only control group design in which it just uses posttest for the experiment and control group. The subject of this research was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012. I took X-1 as the experiment class and X-8 as the control group. The sampling technique is cluster random sampling. The hypothesis states that there is asignificant difference between the reading comprehensionof descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012taught with and without using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD).

The result of the research shows that there is significantly progress for the students in reading comprehension of descriptive text taught with using STAD. The mean is 85.84 and standard deviation of the students taught with using STAD is8.90 which iscategorized “excellent”. Then the mean of the students taught without using STAD are 76.04 and standard deviation is 10.81 which is categorized “good”. The t-observation (to) is4.0296. It is higher than t-table (tt) 1.9971 in the level of significance 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 62, (to = 4.0296>tt = 1.9971). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research that states there is asignificant difference between the reading comprehensionof descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012taught with and without using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) is “confirmed”. While, the Null Hypothesis (Ho) that states there is no significant difference between the reading comprehensionof descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Jepara in the academic year 2011/2012taught with and without using Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) is “rejected”.

The result of this research shows that STAD can improve the reading comprehension of the students. Therefore, the English teacher can apply STAD as an alternative technique in teaching process in order to help the students improve their reading comprehension, especially for English reading texts.
